Sky High

I started this book during the 2014 NaNoWriMo. (I was a winner, yay!) After a very exhausting November (full time job, Japanese lessons and other private matters) I took a break in December – and never got back to writing until July/August 2015. At that point, I had already lost my momentum and had to re-read my book to get into context again. That took a considerable amount of effort and I swore to not make the same mistake again. 🙂

Once I finished reading what I had so far, I jumped back into writing and finished the next 15000 words over a period of about 2 months. I wanted to follow Brandon Sanderson‘s approach to editing, but after reading Killing the Sacred Cows of Publishing by Dean Wesley Smith, I decided for a 3-revision process.

After fixing some issues with the story, I sent it off to my test readers. I was quite nervous, because to me the book wasn’t thrilling or surprising anymore – after having read it beginning to end at least 5 times – and I didn’t have any gauge on the pace etc. That’s why I was quite surprised when I got very positive feedback. 🙂

And after reading Dean’s Killing the Sacred Cows of Indie Publishing, I opted to publish the book myself. I hired a professional copy editor and here I am: My first book is available for purchase!

Here’s the blurb of the book:

2314. Humanity has failed to colonize space. After expanding horizontally for centuries, all of Earth is covered in one giant city. The only way left to go was up, so they built towards the sky. Then, one hundred years ago, a meteor hit Earth, annihilating a region formerly known as Europe. The death toll was staggering, but that was not all. That was when the changing began and the first Evos appeared.
With limited space for humans to live, Earth’s government instated a law to keep the population healthy and strong. The Natural Selection. Anyone found to have a hereditary mutation will be sterilized – including their children.

Mark is a Jumper, one of the few daring to take the Tubes going up and down the city. When he receives a note from his long dead father, and government agents appear on his door the next day, he is thrown into a journey that questions the very understanding of his life and the world he lives in…
